Re:Baltica investigates Latvia's 'Deniers, Agitators and Glorifiers' of Russia's war

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The Baltic Center for Investigative Journalism, Re:Baltica, has a new story available in English that outlines who in Latvia are the few public supporters of Russian war crimes, and what action law enforcement has taken with respect to their views.

Titled 'A Year of War. The Deniers, the Agitators, the Glorifiers—Who are They?', the investigation says that since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Latvian security services  have opened more than 40 criminal probes for incitement of hate, undermining the interests of Latvia, violations of EU sanctions and other crimes, including some that don’t have legal precedent.

The piece also asks if, in some cases at least, restrictions are in danger of going too far and might restrict the principle of freedom of speech enshrined in article 100 the Latvian Constitution: "Everyone has the right to freedom of expression, which includes the right to freely receive, keep and distribute information and to express his or her views. Censorship is prohibited."
