Due to the rapid increase in utility and energy expenses, this year the demand for local government assistance to cover housing costs has increased by 77%, the Riga City Council said October 14.

In the nine months of 2022, Riga municipality has allocated EUR 8.3 million for the purpose, which is EUR 3.6 million, or 77% more than last year.

Meanwhile, the number of beneficiaries increased to 12,670 people - by 4,748 or 60% more than last year. Compared to September last year, the number of beneficiaries of benefits increased by 80%, while the total amount of benefits granted increased by 84%.

Riga municipality reminded the public that every resident declared in the capital has the right to apply for housing benefits for rent, management and other utility payments if, after these expenses, less than €327 is left for the first or only person in the family and €228 for each next person in the family.

Family expenses, savings, and property ownership are assessed for the grant of the benefit. The calculation of the amount of the benefit to be paid also takes into account the regulatory framework for the various public utility payments.
