The two planes in question were the massive AN-22 transport freighter and its lighter, but similarly purposed counterpart AN-72, known in NATO code as a "Coaler".

The scramble comes the same day as reports of massive paratrooper drills being conducted by Russia across the inland borders of Estonia and Latvia in the Pskov region involving around 2,000 troops plus attack helicopters.
