Russian navy edges closer to Latvian sea border

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Latvia's National Armed Forces (NBS) reported Saturday that they had spotted a Russian warship very close to the country's maritime border in the Baltic Sea.

The NBS tweeted that a corvette named "Soobrazitelny" with registration number 531 had been spotted just 4.8 kilometers from the maritime border.

The latest spot maintains a week-long trend of sightings, each getting slightly closer to the border line as Russia seemingly attempts to intimidate and test the patience of its neighbors.

'Soobrazitelny' is a modern Steregushchiy class ship, launched as recently as 2010. It is a formidable fighting ship with a top speed of 27 knots (50 km/h), a helicopter landing pad and surface-to-air missiles, torpedoes and anti-submarine depth charges.

On Sunday, the NBS reported a spate of Russian military aircraft flying over neutral waters in the Baltic Sea, also not far from the Latvian border.

Later, yet further sightings were reported:
