Saeima supports proposal blocking Riga Card privileges

Take note – story published 5 years ago

On February 21 the Latvian parliament supported a motion that would have the Rīga municipality provide public services equally to Latvian residents, no matter where they live.

The National Alliance bill would level the privileges enjoyed by Rīga Card holders, which take the form of cheaper transport tickets, cheaper parking, and more.

To become a Rīga Card holder, you have to have your official place of residency declared in Rīga, or else pay about €64 a month, though the cost would outweigh the benefits for the vast majority of potential holders.

The card was first floated in 2013 and was criticized by state institutions and locals who have declared their residency outside Rīga.

The parliament is still to review the bill in the third and final reading.
