Latvian Border Guard officers detained 29 illegal immigrants from Vietnam and two persons involved in the human trafficking attempt over the weekend, reported national information agency LETA Monday.

On Monday the Border Guard investigated signs of illegal border crossers in the parish of Pasiene and caught twelve Vietnamese citizens hiding not far from the Ļuzina lake.

According to the Border Guard, also on Sunday night a major interdiction effort snared seventeen citizens of Vietnam and a 35-year-old Estonian non-citizen who was transporting them across the border through the Ļebedinca bog in the parish of Līdumnieki.

So far this year there have already been 110 arrests of foreign citizens trying to cross the border into Latvia, 102 of them from Vietnam. Amongst the traffickers themselves, nine have been identified as Latvian citizens, seven from Russia, three from Poland and one each from Kirghizstan, Tajikistan and Estonia.

In 2014 the Border Guard detained a total of 139 illegally-entered foreign citizens inside the border, 98 of whom were from Vietnam.
