Currently, Article 110 of the Constitution states:
The State shall protect and support marriage - a union between a man and a woman, the family, the rights of parents and rights of the child. The State shall provide special support to disabled children, children left without parental care or who have suffered from violence.
On the other hand, the amended Article 110 of the Constitution would state:
The State shall protect and support marriage – a union between a man and a woman – and a family based on marriage, blood relation, or adoption. The State shall protect the rights of a child, including the right to grow in a family based on a mother-woman and a father-man. The State shall protect the rights of parents and their freedom to raise children with according to their religious and philosophical beliefs. The State shall provide special support to children with disabilities and parents who care for them, children who have been left without parental care or suffered from abuse, multi-child families, and mothers and fathers who care for children without the other parent.
The initiative was submitted by the 'Latvian Union of Husbands'. Voters will be able to sign under the proposed amendment to the Constitution for 12 months, from 30 July 2021 to 29 July 2022.
As all CVK-registered initiatives, voters can electronically vote on the portal www.latvija.lv or in person.
The number of signatures needed to allow the draft amendment to be submitted to parliament is 154 868, which is at least than one-tenth of the number of voting citizens in the last Saeima elections.
