A family of three Syrians, including one preschool-age child, were relocated to Latvia from Greece today, under the EU refugee relocation scheme, reported LETA Tuesday.

The family were lead to the asylum seeker center in Mucenieki near Rīga. They have worked in the financial sector and in supply of medical goods. The asylum seekers speak Arabic and English.

So far Latvia has admitted 56 people under the EU's refugee relocation and resettlement scheme. The first group of asylum seekers was transferred to Latvia early February this year.

As reported, the Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs has decided to grant refugee status and alternative protection to 17 people from Iraq, Syria and Eritrea who have been relocated to Latvia from southern European countries.

Latvia has committed to taking in 531 asylum seekers in two years.
