TEDxRiga: from artists to entrepreneurs in Latvia

Take note – story published 4 years ago

The eighth TEDxRiga idea forum will be held on November 22. During the event local and international guests will share their ideas at the Latvian National Library. This year's forum theme will be "Together”, and the speaker list has been announced by the organizers.

“This year's TEDxRiga theme emphasises that together our power is greater. In coming together we can create something greater than we can individually," says TEDxRiga Organizational Team Representative Pāvils Jurjāns.

This will also be the 30th anniversary of the Baltic Way  – the perfect moment to remember how much we can accomplish together,” says Jurjāns

On November 12 all speakers and artists were announced, including:

Platons Buravickis is a contemporary classical music composer and pianist. He has devoted himself to both traditional areas like symphonic and chamber orchestra music, as well as electro-acoustic music. He received a master’s degree in composition from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music.

Alan Melikdjanian is better known as his pseudonym Captain Disillusion. As a filmmaker, visual effects artist, writer and performer he has produced many videos explaining hoaxes and illusions on YouTube. Over the past 12 years his YouTube channel continues to grow past 1.7 million subscribers.

Jānis Kreilis is the founder and manager of Your Move, a job platform helping attract global talent to Latvia. He's also the founder of Ar pasaules pieredzi Latvijā (With Global Experience in Latvia), a community for re-emigrants and expats living in Latvia. He is a re-emigrant himself, and having spent about a third of his life abroad, focuses his own energy on dispelling myths about Latvia as a great place to live and work.

PRAGAII is an experimental pop music project formed in 2015 by Aleksis Luriņš, ex-bassist in Carnival Youth, and electronic music artist Kaspars "Kashuks" Kubeckis. Their style is a mix of both musicians' individual musical preferences and experiences, brought together by a joint love of sound engineering and producing intriguing and yet unheard style of music. The duo released their first album in November.

Rihards Plešanovs is a pianist who received a master's degree from the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and plays in the Arcandela musical union and Quadra piano quartet. He has received several musical awards and has also become a composer. He is also a teacher and accompanist at the Pārdaugava and Carnikava music schools.

Other TEDxRiga 2019 guests and the idea forum program are available on their website. The event's official languages are English and Latvian.

As previously reported, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a thought-provoking experience. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including Riga's are self-organized.
