A 10-year-old girl, Maribella, who vanished a week ago after a walk on the ice of the River Ilūkste, was unfortunately found dead on Saturday, January 21, Latvian Television reported.

State Fire and Rescue Service, which carried out a river crawl in cooperation with volunteers, confirmed the fact to LTV. The girl was found dead near the bank.

Maribella vanished Sunday, January 15, when she didn't return home after a walk with her seven-year-old sister.

Sunday, in the middle of the day, the sisters went for a walk with their dog. At first, the sisters played in the courtyard, jumping on the trampoline, seen by their mother from the window, then left the courtyard.

The family lives by the river. What exactly happened then, the seven-year-old sister of the missing girl had told her mother.

“As the girl stepped on the ice that was along the river shore, the ice broke and the girl was trapped in the water,” said Vladislavs Okuņevs, chief of the Daugavpils Regional precinct of Latgale State Police.

The responsible services recall that the ice is rapidly melting over the water bodies and that it is extremely dangerous to step on it. In the twenty-odd days of 2023, six dead bodies have already been removed from water, according to VUGD statistics.
