Unemployment flat in third quarter

Latvia's unemployment level fell slightly in the third quarter of 2014 compared to the same period a year ago but was unchanged compared to the second quarter of 2014, the Central Statistics Bureau (CSB) said Monday in a data release.

In the third quarter of 2014 there were 885,700 employed persons in Latvia or 59.3% of the population aged 15-74 - exactly the same level as in the second quarter.

The share of women in the total number of employed persons was slightly higher than that of men at 50.1% and 49.9% respectively.

However, due to a decrease in the total population, the number of people actually employed declined by 3,400 compared to the previous quarter.

"It mostly affected the administrative and support service activities, real estate activities, finance and insurance, manufacturing, and accommodation and food services sector," the CSB said.

There was some relatively good news with figures showing youth unemployment dropping - albeit slowly and from a very high level.

In the third quarter of 2014  69,500 or 33% of the population of this age group were employed, against 30.2% a year ago and 30.9% in the second quarter of 2014.
