Take note – story published 9 years ago

Latvia's armed forces (NBS) were keeping tabs Sunday on Russian navy ships not far from the country's territorial waters.

In a tweet, the NBS said it was monitoring a Sorum-class ship within Latvia's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and 11 nautical miles (20 kilometers) from Latvia's sea border, plus a Smolnyy-class ship slightly further out at 14 nautical miles (26 kilometers) from the maritime border.

Smolnyy-class ships were built in the 1970s for naval training purposes

In a separate announcement, the Defense Ministry said it had signed contracts worth €14m for ammunition during the past year including €5m on Carl Gustav anti-tank weapons and €9m on other ammunition of various calibers for training and other uses.
