World's largest plane brings CAR mission gear home

Take note – story published 9 years ago

The world’s largest aircraft – the Antonov AN-225 Mriya landed at Riga International Airport (RIX) Monday, bringing home the last soldiers from the completed National Armed Forces mission in the Central African Republic in support of the EU’s peacekeeping efforts there.

The Mriya’s landing marked the second time the conspicuously large plane was seen at RIX, as it was also here June 12 to take the newly-acquired equipment and materiel to the NBS mission in the CAR.

As reported, most of the soldiers from Latvia’s contingent returned home on November 20, where they helped maintain security at the Bangui airport as well as patrolling and convoying humanitarian aid cargoes into town.

While the EU continues its mission for another three months, Latvia’s pullout of its troops from their deployment in Bangui is final.
