You've got official mail - e-address to be assigned to every Latvian

The State Regional Development Agency (VRAA) is soon to conclude agreements worth €5.5m with IT firms ABC software and RIX Technologies for developing the Latvija.lv state portal. The agreement includes creating an official e-address for every Latvian resident, reported Latvian Radio Monday.

At the moment the government portal offers 125 online services and serves as a gateway to 300 others hosted elsewhere.

The most popular services are declaring one's place of residence, applying for studies and finding info about the social contributions one has made.

Among the services in the works are the chance to vote for initiatives at the Saeima, as well as maintaining an official online address–not to be confused with an email address–for every Latvian resident.

"[The e-address] is a way in which residents and companies will be able to communicate with the state digitally.

Everyone will be able to go to Latvija.lv, check that they want to receive digital messages from the state, and from then on state institutions will not use regular post or email but rather the official e-address, which will in turn inform the resident via the specified email address about a new message," said Edgars Cīrulis, deputy director of the VRAA.

The e-address should be introduced by March 2018.
