Warmer weather expected only next week in Latvia

Hoarfrost will persist in Latvia throughout the week, according to forecasts.

During the second half of the week, it will sometimes snow slightly, however, only in the central and eastern parts of the country will a 1-3 centimeter layer of fresh snow form, which will not save the plants much from the island.

The minimum temperature on this week's nights will be mostly -17 C to -12 C, for places in Vidzeme even -23 C to -20 C, warmer in Kurzeme – around -11 C to -7 C. In the daytime, temperatures will be only a few degrees higher.

The prevailing will be easterly, northeastern winds, which are yet to gain strength on Wednesday, with gusts reaching 10-15 meters per second, while on the North Kurzeme coast up to 20-22 meters per second. Winds will get slower over the weekend.

Hoarfrost will cause damage to seedlings and fruit trees and berries will also suffer. This will be the strongest hoarfrost since at least 2015 and 2014, when a lot of plants froze.

Warmer weather is expected no earlier than the first half or middle of next week.
