Temperatures of -30 C expected in parts of Latvia over weekend

During the weekend, the weather will become even colder in Latvia, according to forecasts.

Frost will intensify in eastern Latvia, but in Kurzeme it will be similar to what has already been experienced during the working week.

During the weekend, the wind will be slow, mostly from the north and east. There will be little snow; the sky will often clear and frost will form too.

In the early morning of Saturday, temperatures in most of Vidzeme and Latgale will be at -25 C to -20 C, elsewhere in the country mostly -15 C to -10 C, slightly warmer in Kurzeme.

Throughout Saturday, colder air will continue to flow into eastern Latvia, so temperatures will not rise significantly in the day, even drop in many places.

Coldest weather is expected early Sunday morning, with around -30 C in Vidzeme and Latgale, in the central part of the country -22 C to -17 C and Kurzeme -14 C to -9 C.

The night to Monday in eastern Latvia will also be very cold but as of Tuesday it will become warmer and thaw will begin.

The cold expected over the weekend will be the largest in Latvia in at least three years.

The last time -30 C temperatures were registered in Latvia was in January 2021.

In Riga, the air temperature will be close to -20 C during this weekend . Previously, the last time -20 C was recorded in the city center was on January 8, 2016.
