January was rather cold in Latvia

 Although January ended with a thaw in Latvia, overall it was the coldest month in at least three years, according to information from the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center.

The average monthly temperature in the country was -5.2 C overall. Previously the last month with such low average temperatures was February 2021.

Last month, the coldest was the morning of January 8, when temperatures dropped to -29.5 C in Daugavpils, while the warmest weather was on January 29, when +7 C was recorded in Kolka.

Precipitation reached 40.9 millimeters nationally on average in January, 19 percent below the climatic norm. It snowed and rained the most in Latgale.

The strongest wind gusts were seen on January 22 in Ventspils at 23.1 meters per second.
