Thaw expected next week in Latvia

Cold weather will persist in Latvia in the coming days but a thaw is possible next week, according to forecasts.

Frost will remain in Latvia until next week. Overnight air temperatures will mostly be -9 C to -4 Celsius, in places, mostly in Vidzeme and Latgale, with the sky clearing, up to -14 C to -10 C. During the day, the temps will be within -8 C to -3 C, along the coast to -1 C.

There will be some snow again in the days ahead, but there will be little precipitation. The prevailing will be slow south-easterly winds, intensifying on Sunday with gusts reaching 8-13 meters per second, places on the coast around 15 meters per second. As the frost persists and the wind intensifies, Sunday will seem particularly cold.

Latvia will be crossed by the warm atmospheric front early next week, so some thaw will occur in most of Latvia on Monday.

Current forecasts show temperatures will be more volatile next week - sometimes rising above zero and then sinking again. More precipitation and gusty winds are expected. The thaw will be more persistent in Kurzeme, so the snow layer will shrink significantly there, however, total snow melt is unlikely next week. In eastern Latvia, thaws will be very short-lived.

Ice is often to be reckoned with in the changing weather next week.
