First snowfall of the season recorded in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

Saturday night and Sunday morning brought the first recorded snowfall of the season to several districts of Latvia.

Observation stations of the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC), showed snowfall was recorded by sensors in Priekuli, Zosēni, Madona, Skrīveri, Jēkabpils and Daugavpils.

Residents' reports on social networks showed that a small layer of slushy snow formed in some places in the Vidzeme highlands, as well as in Jēkabpils district.

In many places around Riga and Jūrmala, as well as in Zemgale, the ground was also briefly white – though this was caused by hailstones from storm conditions.

Heavier snowfall this morning affected the north of Lithuania, in the vicinity of Utena.

The first wet snow at the beginning of October is a common phenomenon in Latvia. Last year, the beginning of autumn was generally much colder tha this year, but the first snow fell only on November 5.

High, gusty winds persist in Latvia Sunday, though they have abated slightly compared to the storm of Friday night and Saturday which caused damage to many trees and kept work teams busy keeping roads clear of debris. Nevertheless, a yellow warning for high winds remains in place across the country Sunday and is upgraded to an orange warning along the coast.
