At the beginning of next week, plenty of rain and a rapid increase in air temperature are expected in Latvia, forecasters predict.

On Sunday night winter will still hold sway. There will be few clouds, the air temperature will drop as low as -10 degrees Celsius inland, and -1 C on the coast.

Monday will bring the arrival of a warm atmospheric front from the west, which will start to change conditions markedly. The sky will be cloudy, and in the middle of the day there could be a few snow flurries but these will turn into rain as temperatures gradually rise.

Already on Monday night and early Tuesday morning, the air temperature will warm up to from +3 to +7 C, and southerly wind gusts of up to 14-19 meters per second are expected.

During the day on Tuesday, the temperature will continue to rise, reaching +10 degrees in the southern and western parts of the country. Fog and rain are expected in many places.

The warm and moist air, as well as rain and wind, will contribute to a widespread thaw, with large puddles likely and a rapid rise in river water levels.

On Wednesday, drier and cooler air will begin to move in from the west and the week should finish with temperatures around freezing again – but next weekend could again get warmer. According to the current "Global Forecast System" forecast, the second half of March is generally expected to be cool - it will still snow and the temperature will often drop below zero.
