Spring begins in some parts of Latvia

On February 12, in some parts in western and southern Latvia, as well as in Rīga, the meteorological spring began, preliminary information suggests.

The meteorological spring begins when the average daily air temperature is above zero for five consecutive days, and its start is the first of those days.

Weather forecasts suggest average air temperatures will be above zero in much of the country until Saturday, February 17, with maximum temperatures expected to reach +8 C on Friday and overnight into Saturday.

In recent years, as the climate grew warmer, it has often been difficult to draw the line between the beginning and end of the meteorological autumn, winter, and spring, so a criterion has been introduced that meteorological spring can only occur after February 6, which is statistically the coldest day of the year in Latvia.

Last year, in much of Kurzeme, the meteorological spring began on the earliest possible date - February 7.

Also in 2022, Latvia's meteorological spring began on February 7 and had begun all over the country by the end of the month.

The darkest quarter of the year, or so-called solar winter, concluded in early February, while astronomical winter will continue until the spring equinox on March 20.
