Cyclone Felix swirls in with wintry mix

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Felix, the cyclone swooping across Scandinavia sideswiped the Baltic coast late Saturday, bringing blizzard-like conditions across the land from Kurzeme through to Zemgale, Vidzeme and Latgale. However, immediately behind the storm’s wintry mix will come a thawing period combined with gale-force winds Sunday.

After a week of back-and-forth snows and thaws, forecasts tamed down projections of possibly historic gales. Nevertheless, Felix’s winds and dumping of wet snow have already snarled traffic conditions with low visibility and ice-slush on the roads, and left homes without electricity as heavy snow and winds fell tree branches onto the power lines Saturday.

Strongest winds so far were recorded in Liepāja, reaching 20 meters per second on the beach, 17 meters per second downtown. Road conditions in western Kurzeme province are already reported to be turning to ice after snow had begun to thaw during earlier hours.

Authorities warn residents to stay off the roads unless necessary and exercise caution when venturing outside.
