December 2021 one of the coldest in recent times

According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meterology Center (LVĢMC), December 2021 was one of the coldest recorded recently in Latvia.

The average air temperature in Latvia in December was -4.1 degrees Celsius, which is 3 C below the monthly norm for 1991-2020 and 2.1 C below the 1981-2010 monthly norm. 

The minimum monthly air temperature of -27.1 C was observed on December 7 in Zosēni, while the maximum air temperature of +7.3 C was observed on December 16 in Rucava.

A total of 11 minimum air temperature records were broken in December, two of which were new decade minimum air temperature records.

The total amount of precipitation in Latvia in December was 56.3 mm, which is 5% above the 1991-2020 monthly norm (53.7 mm) and 2% above the 1981-2010 monthly norms (55.4 mm). 

The highest precipitation (110.9 mm) was in Rucava, but the lowest in Dobele (24.0 mm). On average in Latvia in December there were 13.7 days with a precipitation of at least 1 mm. The highest number of such days was in Ventspils - 19 days, but the lowest in Daugavpils, Dobele and Piedruja - 10 days.

In December, snowy periods alternated with thaws, during which the snow cover fell. The thickest snow cover was observed on December 5 in Sigulda - 39 cm.

The strongest wind gusts (22.9 m / s) were observed on December 26 in Daugavgrīva.
