On Sunday, it will be very hot in most of Latvia but extreme heat is expected on Monday and Tuesday, with air temperatures not dropping below 20 degrees Celsius at night and climbing above 32 C during the day. Only in coastal areas will it be slightly cooler, forecasts show.
On Wednesday, the extreme heat will gradually subside and will linger only in eastern parts of the country, but the weather will still be hot on both Wednesday and Thursday, meteorologists said.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center, the highest temperature ever recorded in Latvia on June 20 is 32.1 degrees. The record was set in 1917.
In addition to the air temperature, forecasters and the State Fire and Rescue Service also issued a joint warning about the increased likelihood of fires, so if you are breaking out the barbecue, please take care.
Similarly, the National Health Service which runs Latvia's ambulance crews reminded the public to drink lots of water and seek shadow during the most extreme heat of the day.
