Firefighters worked on 70 cases of wind damage over weekend in Latvia

Over the weekend, the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) received around 70 calls for wind damage, VUGD spokeswoman Agrita Vītola told Latvian Television and Latvian Radio January 31.

In 52 cases, the service had to remove trees from roads; in one case it was a lamppost. In 12 cases the VUGD had to eliminate the hazards posed by wind-torn roof or facade structures.

Most of these calls were received on Sunday, January 30, afternoon mainly in Kurzeme and Rīga and the vicinity.

A call was also received Sunday in the municipality of Madona, where a man had been trapped under a fallen tree and died. Vītola said it was not known whether the accident was related to wind damage.

Unlike in mid-January, when there was strong wind for several days, the number of calls received by the WUGD has not been particularly high this time.
