Fog diverts arriving air traffic

A thick fog shrouded the runways at Riga International Airport (RIX) Sunday, preventing the landings of five flights that had to be diverted to Tallinn, report aviation authority records. As a result, corresponding departures were cancelled as well, however take-offs continued mostly unaffected by delays.

RIX authorities warn passengers to follow the news on the airport’s website or their ticketed airlines, because state meteorology forecasts call for continued low- to no-visibility conditions, as the heavy fog may prevail overnight to Monday.

RIX spokeswoman Sarmīte Rinmane told LSM the situation should improve after dark, when illuminated runway lights help with the visibility through the fog.

Night-time visibility limits on the nation's road system are expected to shrink to just 100 to 500 meters, warn state meteorology and traffic authorities.

Factored in with already freezing temperatures in many parts of Latvia into overnight, the heavy fog is just another reason for drivers to choose an appropriate and reasonable speed and manner of handling their vehicles, just in case of ice, warn the traffic police.

Road surfaces near northwest Kurzeme province's port town of Ventspils have already developed patches of black ice, reported LETA late Sunday afternoon.
