Friday morning lows measured between -9 and -11 degrees Celsius in the eastern Latvian meteorology measuring stations at Madona, Kārsava and Rēzekne. New low temperature records were also set in Alūksne, Gulbene, Jēkabpils, Rūjiena and Zosēni.
The last time it was this cold on this date was in 1973, when the mercury fell to -10.9 degrees.
Friday morning temperatures in the central regions of Latvia were between -6 and -8 degrees, while even the milder coast of western Kurzeme froze between -3 and -6 degrees, with the horn of Kolka at -1 degrees.
Winds gusting from the southeast add to the chill at between 6 to 11 meters per second, with Kolka measuring gusts as strong as 16 meters per second.
Skies will be clear and sunny throughout the land.
Riga experienced the overnight cold at between -6 and -7 degrees, but windchills from 10-meters-per-second gusts made it feel more like -13 degrees below zero.
High temperatures across the country Friday will ‘warm’ up to between -2 and +3 degrees, with Riga seeing a high of +1. Gusty winds will continue to chill the air beyond the already lower-than-usual October lows.
However, Bricis promised that temperatures next week would climb back out from below zero and reach a more seasonal and temperate +10 to +13 degrees.
