Freezing records broken as cold snap hits

The temperature dipped to record lows in the central and eastern regions of Latgale and Vidzeme provinces overnight to Thursday morning, reports the state Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

In the provincial centers of Rēzekne, Alūksne, Priekuļi and Jēkabpils, thermometers measured the lowest ever temperatures for October 23. In Rēzekne the mercury fell to -9.3 degrees Celsius, Alūksne showed a reading of -8.8, Priekuļi -8.7 and Jēkabpils (Zilāni) -7.3 degrees below zero.

Most of the land was under freezing temperatures between -5 and -8 degrees, with Kolka at the horn of Kurzeme’s coast staying just above feezing at +0.5 degrees.

Winds will gust up to between 9 and 14 meters per second. Residents should bundle up against windchills that will make temperatures feel like -10 in Riga and -15 in Latgale, even though highs will reach between -2 and +3 during the day.

Forecasts call for continued sunny and cold weather into Friday, with no precipitation.

Temperatures should begin to rise again gradually beginning Saturday. By Sunday highs in western Kurzeme will be up around +10 degrees.
