Frosty blast to hit deep inland

A cold mass of air flowed into Latvia Tuesday afternoon, bringing temperature readings in far eastern Aluksne to +1 degrees above zero, while the Kurzeme coast measured around +9 and +10 degrees Celsius, reported the state meteorology service.

Indeed, first reports of light snow from Aluksne and other far northern Vidzeme districts have also been confirmed by meteorologists.

Overcast conditions will remain overnight, with scattered clearing and possible drizzle in western Kurzeme province, elsewhere in the land without much chance of precipitation. Winds from the east, southeast will strengthen to gusts by morning of 8 to 13 meters per second, even to 15 meters per second in northern Kurzeme’s horn.

Lows in inland Vidzeme and Latgale provinces will be below zero to -4 degrees, whereas in Kurzeme and southern Zemgale above zero to +4 degrees.

Skies on Wednesday will clear to mostly sunny, however clouds will remain over western Kurzeme, with no chance of rain.

Wind gusts throughout the country will blow strong between 10 and 15 meters per second.

High temperatures during the day are not expected to exceed between zero and +5 degrees.

Riga will see an overcast night, clearing to sunny by Wednesday, no chance of rain. Winds will increase in strength to 10 or 12 meters per second. Overnight lows in the city from zero to +1 degrees, only reaching a high of +2 during the day.
