As of Sunday, the air temperature will continue to rise, and very strong heat is expected in the western and central areas, with air heating up to +32 C. Hot nights are also expected when the air temperature does not fall below +20 C.
Laura Krūmiņa, head of the Latvian Environmental Geology and Meteorology Centre, said that the air temperature will reach +27 C on Thursday morning, but on Sunday the thermometer bar will rise up to +30 C: “This weekend, the heat record is likely to be exceeded, recorded in Mērsrags in 1973, when the temperature was 34.6 C. Quite safely, we can say that the heat wave will last 5-6 days. New air temperature records could be hit at individual observation stations.”
The orange alert has been announced due to high heat.
Specialists recommend seeking a shelter in the shadows at the hottest times of the day, drinking a lot of water, using sunscreen and wearing loose, light clothing.
