Is it winter or is it spring?

Take note – story published 1 year ago

It's an interesting time of year in Latvia – some parts of the country are in spring while others remains stuck in winter's icy grip, according to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC).

Meteorological spring started as early as February 7 at the Baltic Sea coastal observation station at Stende, and one day later in Ainaži. However, at the moment spring can only be found along a thin stretch of coastline. Elsewhere, meteorological winter continues.

As for the weather this week, it certainly owes more allegiance to winter than spring, according to the latest forecasts. The week will start with calm and foggy weather, but precipitation will return in the second half of the week, accrding to the LVĢMC.

The new week will start with calm weather, significant precipitation is not expected, but fog will form in many places, which will make the situation on the roads difficult. The air temperature during the day will remain mostly above freezing, while at night it will drop as low as -10 Celsius at times.

Monday will be cloudy and misty, with precipitation mainly in the east of the country in the form of snow and sleet. The daytime air temperature will be within the range +2 C to +6 C, dipping below freezing in easter districts at night.

Tuesday will be clearer and the sun will shine in many places during the day. Significant precipitation is not expected. In the afternoon, fog will begin to form in places, which will remain until Wednesday morning. Slow to moderate westerly winds continue to blow. The air temperature at night will fluctuate around freezing point, while during the day the air will warm up to between +1 C and +7 C.

Clouds will increase again in the middle of the week with light to moderate southerly winds, but no significant precipitation is expected. On Wednesday , it will be mostly cloudy, but the sky will clear up in the east of the country at times. The air temperature at night in the east, as the sky clears, will drop as low as -10 C, while in the west it will reach -5 C at night. During daylight hours the air will warm up to +5 C.  Thursday will remain mostly cloudy and will be similar to Wednesday.

At the end of the week the weather in Latvia will be determined by the southern part of an active cyclone, under the influence of which precipitation is expected across the entire territory of the country. At night, mainly in the east, the air temperature will still drop below the zero mark, but during the day it will be above freezing point in most of the territory of Latvia.
