Lots more snow incoming Tuesday night and Wednesday

Yet another generous helping of snowfall will reach Latvia on Tuesday evening, and it will continue to snow intermittently throughout Wednesday, according to the latest forecasts.

Tuesday night and Wednesday, strong southerly and southwesterly winds will blow, gusting 13-18 meters per second inland and on the coast up to 20-24 meters per second.

Blizzard conditions mean, visibility will deteriorate, snow drifts will form on the roads, and driving conditions will be hazardous.

The biggest increase in snow cover is expected in Kurzeme and Vidzeme, where it will increase by an average of 5-10 centimeters, however, due to the gusty wind, the thickness of the snow cover will be uneven.

Snowfall will stop in most parts of the country on Wednesday afternoon and evening, but in Vidzeme it will continue to snow on Thursday night as well.

The minimum air temperature at night will be in the range -5 Celsius to zero degrees, during the day the air will warm up to a maximum of +2 C.

On Tuesday afternoon an orange alert (danger) was issued for snowfall across western Latvia for Tuesday and Wednesday with a yellow alert (potential danger) in place across the rest of the country, with an additional yellow alert for high winds across western and central districts.

Nor is that likely to be the end of the snowfall for the week. A new cyclonic weather system is expected to reach Latvia at the weekend, bringing more precipitation and strong winds. The latest forecasts show that warmer air may briefly move in on Saturday, so some of the precipitation will be rain and sleet, but later it will change to snow.
