In the current weather conditions and forecasts, it is likely that the water bodies in the administrative territory of Rīga could develop a thin layer of ice and be dangerous, said the City Council.
Hard though it might be to believe, even the thinnest layer of ice can tempt the craziest ice fishermen to try their luck in more ways than one.
Compliance with this rule will be controlled by the municipal police.
A warning or a fine of up to EUR 100 will be applied for a violation of the law, though the ultimate potential penalty – death by drowning – should provide enough deterrence already.
The fish can wait, and the emergency services have plenty of other things to attend to.
