No stepping on the ice in Rīga

Take note – story published 1 year ago

As of November 24 it is prohibited to step on the ice of water bodies and seaside waters in the administrative territory of Rīga, said the Rīga City Council.

In the current weather conditions and forecasts, it is likely that the water bodies in the administrative territory of Rīga could develop a thin layer of ice and be dangerous, said the City Council.

Hard though it might be to believe, even the thinnest layer of ice can tempt the craziest ice fishermen to try their luck in more ways than one.

Compliance with this rule will be controlled by the municipal police.

A warning or a fine of up to EUR 100 will be applied for a violation of the law, though the ultimate potential penalty – death by drowning – should provide enough deterrence already.

The fish can wait, and the emergency services have plenty of other things to attend to.
