Orange alert on heavy snowfall Wednesday night in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On the night to Thursday and on Thursday morning, in many parts of Latvia, it will snow, and the orange alert will be in force due to the heavy snowfall, said the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

A cyclone is coming to Latvia from the west, and this afternoon a large area of intense snowfall will be crossing Latvia. A very strong snowfall is expected at night to Thursday, with a 5-7 centimeter-thick snow blanket forming in most of Latvia, 10-12 in the west.

The wind will come from the east and northeast, with gusts reaching 15-20 meters per second.

The air temperature on both Thursday night and morning will range from -6 C in the northeast of the country to 0, +1 C degrees on the seaside in Kurzeme, but it will get colder in the second half of the day.

In these weather conditions, driving will be difficult: roads will get slippery and snowy, visibility will be poor.

The snow and blizzard will hardly affect the north of Vidzeme, and a snow layer may not form there, so the expected temperature drop over the weekend will be dangerous for the crops and gardens.

Snowing across the country will stop by Thursday noon.
