Temperatures will continue to be extremely high across Latvia on Monday, June 27 and the next few days, with an official red warning issued by meteorologists.

From 12:00 until 15:00 on both Monday and Tuesday the red warning will be in place in all Latvian territory, the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) said, predicting temperatures of up to +33 Celsius .

From Tuesday, additional problems may arrive in the form of heavy thunderstorms that could cause flash flooding, while strong winds could damage trees, powerlines and lighter structures. The heatwave is expected to remain in place until at least Saturday, with temperatures unlikely to fall below 20 degrees in Rīga even at night.

As previously reported, due to the hot weather, the risk of various health problems is significantly increased. Members of the public are advised to stay out of direct sunlight, especially in the middle of the day. Fluid intake (non-alcoholic) should be increased and you should drink regularly throughout the day. Exertion in the sweltering conditions may lead to hyperthermia, and people cooling off in rivers and lakes are advised to exert caution, with several drowning tragedies already reported.
