Red alert on storm in the Baltic sea

A red alert on storm has been issued in the Baltic Sea, said the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVGMC) January 20.

This afternoon from 15:00 to 18:00 offshore wind gusts will reach 33 metres per second (m/s), with waves up to 5-7.5 metres.

On land in the west of Kurzeme, the orange warning is in force, but the LVGMC has again increased the projected wind speed – this evening the gusts will reach 30-32 m/s. Such winds can cause extensive damage to roofs, trees, power lines.

Elsewhere in Kurzeme and along the Gulf of Riga wind gusts will be up to 20-24 m/s.

Snow and wet snow is expected throughout Latvia. In the evening, in Kurzeme and in the central part of the country, snow will be strong, and such weather conditions can be described as a snowstorm. Driving conditions will be poor – the roads are slippery, the visibility will decrease during snowfall.
