Early this week conditions will stay frosty with daytime temperatures below freezing point but by Wednesday night that is set to change with daytime temperatures above zero.
Temperatures will be kept up by increasing cloud cover, with the resulting risk of rain and sleet - and morning ice on roads making driving treacherous.
Weak, mostly southwesterly winds will prevail.
Long-term projections show that another brief cold snap may return at the end of the month but that February will most likely be warm with air temperatures consistently above zero.
Last year, after a steady and sometimes harsh first half of January, it became significantly warmer and 28 January 2016 saw meteorological 'spring' conditions arriving in the coastal Kurzeme region, which usually enjoys milder conditions than the rest of Latvia.
