This week's weather in Latvia: snow, sleet, rain - not necessarily in that order

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The picture-postcard snow-covered scenes of recent days in Latvia are likely to be spoiled Monday with the arrival of rain and sleet, though many places will also experience fresh snowfall.

Consequently, roads will be slippery, and patches of lingering ice beneath the fresh rain, added to temperatures fluctuation on either side of freezing point could create treacherous conditions for drivers.

Moderate southerly and south-easterly winds will blow, with gusts of 7-12 meters per second.

Air temperatures will slowly rise, reaching +1 to -2 degrees Celsius in the evening, and as usual the air in the Kurzeme region in the west of the country will be milder, climbing as high as + 5 C. Consequently, conditions could become wet and muddy in many places.

The warmer temperatures - and the melting of snow - will continue Tuesday, but the middle of the week will see temperatures falling again with the skies clearing and barometric pressure on the rise.

the end of the week will see thicker cloud cover, more snow and rainfall and stronger winds of 15 to 19 meters per second.
