Week of snow and wind ahead in Latvia

Take note – story published 5 years ago

The week starting January 14 will bring with it a considerable amount of fresh snowfall and at times even snowstorms, say forecasters.

Snow flurries on Monday and Tuesday will be seen in many places, particularly in Kurzeme and around Rīga, so that snow cover will grow by several centimeters. Strong winds of up to 20 meters per second are also expected on the coast. It will also become colder with the chance of thawing temperatures remaining only on the coast of Kurzeme.

On Wednesday, the weather will improve - the wind will ease off and the sun will shine in many places. At night the temperature will drop to -1 C to -6 C, though parts of Vidzeme will experience -10 C.  The day will be only a few degrees warmer, but on Thursday the Baltic region will brace for the arrival of a new strong cyclone system bringing heavy snow and blizzard conditions. But temperatues will also rise, creating an unpleasant mixture of thaw, sleet and cold rain, with temperatures climbing to + 5 C.

On Friday, the wind will come from the northwest and the cooler air will freeze everything up again, so driving conditions could be particularly treacherous. During next weekend, at night the temperature will drop below -10 C again.
