Weekend blizzards expected before cold snap next week

Strong winds and blizzards are expected in Latvia during the weekend, forecasters warn.

Driving conditions will often be difficult due to poor visibility and snowy, slippery roads, strong winds, and snow drifts on the roads. There may also be obstacles created by the wind on the roads, such as fallen trees and branches.

Winds will start to increase on Friday night, and by Saturday morning and during the day, northwesterly wind gusts will reach 16-21 meters per second in most parts of the country, and up to 25-27 meters per second on the coast.

Such winds can topple trees, their branches and damage light structures such as construction scaffolding. Winds will begin to die down Saturday evening.

At night, snow and blizzards are expected in the central and eastern parts of Latvia, but in places in Kurzeme there will likely be rain in the mix, while during the day there will be intermittent blizzards throughout the country.

Air temperatures for Friday night and Saturday will be  in the range -3 to +2 degrees Celsius.

On Sunday, the wind will die down, but it will still snow from time to time, and heavy snowfall is expected in some places. The air temperature will drop, and early Sunday morning it may reach -7 C inland but zero on the sea coast. The day will be milder, between -2 C and + 2 C.

By Sunday evening, a layer of snow a few centimeters thick will form again in many places in Kurzeme and Zemgale, where the snow has melted so far, but in Vidzeme and Latgale, the snow cover will increase by about 10-15 centimeters.

Next week too, it will often snow and spring will remain on hold. When the sky clears, the temperature may drop to -15 C in the east of the country.
