Weekend weather: some chance of a White Christmas

Take note – story published 3 years ago

Next week Latvia will see more than reindeer descending from the sky with plenty of rain but also some snow expected, according to the latest forecasts.

During the weekend the weather will be cloudy, in some places it will rain, and the air temperature will be mostly in the range of +1 Celsius to + 7 C during the day, though Sunday night could see temperatures dip below freezing point in the east of the country. A moderate south to southwesterly wind will blow.

Both rain and snow are expected frequently next week. During the three pre-Christmas working days, the air temperature will be mostly +1 C to + 6 C, the east of the country at night dipping to - 2 C.

A small layer of snow cover will likely form in Vidzeme and Latgale. Current forecasts show that on December 24, there will be a layer of snow up to a few centimeters thick in the east of Latvia. In the coming holidays, snow will appear elsewhere, but as the temperature fluctuates around zero, the layer of snow will be slushy and unstable.

After Christmas, it is likely to get colder. Longer-term forecasts show that at the end of this year and the beginning of next year the average air temperature will be around the climatic norm, which means that at least in the east of Latvia there will be a small but stable freeze.
