Find that thermal underwear in a hurry, as the weekend of January 26-27 is going to be a cold one, according to forecasters.

Temperatures will drop over Saturday and Sunday morning will greet us with -20 Celsius in large parts of the country though as usual, coastal areas will be considerably milder.

On Saturday, the whole of the Baltic region will be crossed by a large rain and snow system. The air temperature will drop to an average of -8 to -13 C, on the coast around -5 to -7 degrees.

Then on Saturday night and into Sunday night the clouds will thin out and the air temperature will drop, and in many places it will be around -20 C by early morning. The day in most parts of Latvia will be sunny, but still cold.

Next week is likely to start with the thermometer heading further into the blue zone. Early Monday morning could be -25 C, but over the course of next week it will become warmer and, although the freeze will mainly stay in place, the temperature will fluctuate around zero and slight, brief thaws are even possible.
