Winter's strongest blizzard to hit Latvia overnight

Take note – story published 7 years ago

This winter’s strongest blizzard is going to hit Latvia, especially its western and southern parts, in the early hours of Wednesday and during the day, while the coldest air since January 2016 will reach Latvia on Wednesday evening, say meteorologists.

The latest forecasts suggest that snowing is not expected in the northern parts of Vidzeme, but that strong winds will be blowing in all Latvia. The most intensive snowing is forecast in the early hours of Wednesday in Kurzeme and later also in Zemgale and southern Latgale.

On Wednesday evening, significant snowing will continue only in southeastern Latvia.

Due to strong winds, the blizzard can be very strong in many areas and is likely to reach the strength of a snow storm in Kurzeme.

Due to the weather, public transportation in Rīga is free for motorists who have a car's technical pass with them on Tuesday since 1 p.m. and on Wednesday.

Early on Tuesday Riga was blanketed with 9 cm deep snow. All 59 of Riga's winter service vehicles (snow plows) have been dispatched to clear the city streets.
