Three for the Weekend: Not Just Positivus

This weekend, the Positivus festival takes place in Rīga, Lucavsala, as usual bringing together tens of thousands of people. But what else is going on?

Jūrmala Festival

From July 15 to 23, the ninth Jūrmala Festival takes place at the Dzintari Concert Hall with ten grandiose concerts. The festival will begin, as is now tradition, with a sunrise concert on July 16 on the Dzintari beach with organist Iveta Apkalna. There will be a train from Rīga to Dzintari at 3:45 in the morning. The concert is free.

Ice Cream Fest

For all the overheated with a sweet tooth, an ice cream festival will be taking place on July 16 at the Āgenskalns market, with over ten local ice cream producers and the broadest range of sweet treats – from the classic dairy ice cream to Italian gelato, to vegan and alternative solutions. Entrance is free and the event, along with activities and music, takes place 9:00 to 17:00.

Feminist Views in Latvian Art

From July 15 to October 15, the Latvian National Museum of Art will house an exhibition “Tikai neraudi! Feministiskie skatījumi Latvijas mākslā: 1965–2023” ("Just don't cry! Feminist views in Latvian art 1965–2023").

"The exhibition “Just don't cry!” shows Latvian art in a feminist interpretation, uses family discourse and fits into a stream of social activism, offering the women to talk about themselves. The title of the project includes a ban on sentiment and, consequently, opinion. It recalls and ironies the image of a heroic Soviet woman cultivated during the Soviet occupation, who is coping with any difficulty without complaining. The stigma of the strong woman and the false pride of the Soviet women in their ability to live under severe conditions have led to a decline in critical attitudes to problems and the spirit of social struggle, and this psychological legacy is still felt today," says the description.

The opening of the exhibition takes place on July 14, Jaņa Rozentāla Square 1 (right by the museum).
