At its meeting on August 11, the Latvian cabinet approved an Education Ministry plan for a major overhaul of the crumbling Daugava Stadium in central Riga that should give it a new lease of life - at a cost of €47m.
The plan aims to renovate the stadium by 2022, making it fit to host major sporting and other events.
European Regional Development Funds will account for €40m of the total spending with the remainder coming from national co-financing.
Following the renovation the stadium will boast seating for 10,000 spectators, athletics tracks, multifunctional halls, an ice rink, gymnasium and improvements to the surrounding areas.
