Eurovision selection under way

Take note – story published 7 years ago

The annual task of selecting a song to represent Latvia in the Eurovision Song Contest ground into gear February 5 with the first heat of Supernova, the official selection show.

Eleven hopefuls performed in front of an all-male panel of four judges before ten minutes of telephone voting decided the four acts that will progress to the next round, namely: Miks Dukurs, Lauris Valters, Linda Leen and the group Franco Franco.

Linda Leen is probably the highest-profile contestant in the battle to go to the Eurovision final in Ukraine, and is considered the favorite to carry the Latvian flag.

However, as is usually the case, all acts were upstaged by the manic antics of the Riga Beaver, a rapping, twerking, preaching rodent who filled in the ad breaks for the studio and international audience. His pseudo-French freestyling was particularly notable.

You can watch the show HERE (link may not work in all territories). You can also watch the songs individually if it's all too much to take in at once.

The second batch of 11 contestants will parade their wares next Sunday, 12 February.

Then there will be a semi-final on February 19.

Then there will be a final on February 26.

Then there will be Eurovision on 9, 11 and 13 of May until the marathon process of picking the singingest, dancingest 2 minutes of the year is done with.

Latvia will compete in the first semi-final in Ukraine.
