"It's the day when you receive an invitation to the greatest birthday, which has ever been -- the birthday of the Latvian state," says a short film designed to place everyone in the party spirit.
The birthday, which officially takes place on November 18, 2018, "will not end within a few hours, but will take several years," the film says, inviting people to also contribute their own means of marking the occasion.
Centenary celebrations will get going in earnest on May 4, 2017, the anniversary of the restoration of Latvia's independence in 1991, when the second "White tablecloth day" event will happen.
The full program of centenary events runs over nearly 4 years, until January 2021.
