Latvian choirs triumph at Baltic Sea Choir Competition

Latvian choirs have triumphed at the first International Baltic Sea Choir Competition in Jūrmala, with Sōla, the choir of the Latvian Academy of Culture, winning the Grand Prix. 

Latvian youth choir Balsis placed second and female choir Balta, also from Latvia, was placed third.

Sōla conductor Kaspars Ādamsons was honored as the best conductor, and youth choir Ondrasek from the Czech Republic scooped the award in the compulsory category for their rendition of Hail, O Star of the Ocean composed by Rihards Dubra.

Sōla was awarded a €3,500 cash prize.

The competition attracted choirs from Finland, Czech Republic, France, Sweden, Slovenia, Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia. The competition will be held on an annual basis.
