Latvian movie 'January' wins international prize

Director Viesturs Kairišs' film January has been voted Best Film in the Progressive Cinema competition at the 17th Rome Film Fest, according to the festival's website.

Kairišs was also honored as the best director and Karlis Arnolds Avots, who plays the lead role in the film, the best actor.

January had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in the United States this past June, where it won the Best International Narrative Feature award.

The National Film Center of Latvia has nominated January for the Best International Feature Film award at the Academy Awards.

January is a coming-of-age story of young filmmakers during the political developments in Rīga in January 1991.

The film is a joint production of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, the making of the film was supported by the National Film Center and the State Cultural Capital Foundation.
